| 3/5/2010 - Ministry of Natural Resources Request Public`s Assistance With Illegal Hunting | |
Between November 17 th and 18th, 2009, conservation officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources attended Short Hills Provincial Park in St. Catharines, Ontario.
The officers discovered evidence of illegal hunting taking place at this location. Suspect(s) had maintained observation of the area while sitting on folding chairs and also put out salt blocks to attract deer. A deer carcass was discovered in a remote area of the park which had obviously been left behind after being skinned.
Short Hills Provincial Park is frequently used by the public for its cycling and nature paths. Although deer hunting season is from October 1 st to December 31st, hunting within the boundaries of the park is strictly prohibited all year.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is guided by various legislation, including the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and Criminal Code of Canada. The public is reminded that trespassing or possessing a firearm for the purpose of illegal hunting carries a penalty of $25,000 and a jail term of up to 2 years upon conviction.

| | 2/26/2010 - Niagara Falls Elderly Couple Robbed at Gunpoint | |
On Monday February 8 th 2010 an elderly husband and wife were walking in the vicinity of Clair Avenue and Ellis Street in Niagara Falls. The elderly couple approached their residence and the woman proceeded to assist her husband in entering their home as he is visually impaired.
At this time, an unknown male approached the woman from behind and held a small chrome coloured handgun to her neck. The suspect demanded that the elderly female surrender her purse and she complied. The suspect fled in an easterly direction towards a local park.
The victim was extremely distraught but managed to call 911. The female victim did not sustain any injuries.
Uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service, along with the Canine Unit and members of the Niagara Falls detective office, attended the scene and searched the area. The stolen purse was located, missing an undisclosed amount of cash. Through further investigation and public assistance police were able to determine that the male was last seen in the area of Crysler Avenue and Huron Street.
The suspect is described as follows:
Male black, 20-25 years of age, 5’7’ to 5’8”, clean shaven, with a medium build, wearing a dark coloured coat with a possible checkered pattern, light coloured baggy jeans, white running shoes and a baseball style hat.

| | 2/19/2010 - Police Seek Assistance in Welland Home Invasion | |
On Friday February 12 th, 2010 at approximately 11:20 p.m. the Niagara Regional Police responded to a home invasion in the City of Welland. Upon arrival, police observed a lone male victim suffering from minor injuries he had sustained during the robbery.
Investigation revealed that four to five unknown males had forced their way into the victim’s residence located on First Avenue. The victim had been immediately restrained and assaulted by the suspects.
The male suspects searched the residence and fled with several pieces of property, including the victim’s vehicle, a 2005 Silver BMW that had been parked in the driveway of the residence.
Another resident of the home arrived shortly after the suspects had fled and assisted the victim.
Police obtained the following suspect descriptions:
Four or five black males with possible Jamaican accents. One male described as 5’10” – 6’ tall, medium build, wearing a green hooded sweater and a dark toque.

| | 2/12/2010 - Canada Post Mailboxes Vandalized in St. Catharines and Fort Erie | |
Between January 29 th and February 1st, 2010, several Canada Post mailboxes were vandalized in the cities of St. Catharines and Fort Erie.
In the west end of St. Catharines, within a three block radius, three community mailboxes were damaged. Six community mailboxes were damaged in the southeast area of Fort Erie, also within a three block radius.
The community mailboxes have numerous residential mailboxes contained in one large unit with an outgoing mail slot on top. The damage occurred as a result of the outgoing mail slots being pried open.

| | 2/5/2010 - Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Bunting Road in St. Catharines | |
On Sunday January 24th, 2010 at approximately 2:40 am, a pedestrian walking along Bunting Road in the city of St. Catharines was intentionally struck by a motor vehicle.
The suspect vehicle was traveling south on Bunting Road when the incident occurred. The vehicle deliberately crossed the northbound lane, went up on a sidewalk and continued across grass boulevards towards the victim. The vehicle struck the victim and then fled, continuing southbound on Bunting Road.
The victim was treated at hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle is described as a 2005 to 2006 white or light coloured Pontiac G6 sedan. The suspect vehicle will have front-end damage around the headlight and/or front grill area.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is asking automobile repair shops to report any vehicle they encounter matching this description and having front-end damage consistent with this hit and run.

| | 1/29/2010 - Stolen Manhole Covers from St. Catharines | |
Between January 18 th and January 26th 2010, several manhole covers have been stolen in the city of St. Catharines.
Two manhole covers were stolen from Merritt Street in St. Catharines between January 18th and 26th, 2010. Sometime between the evening of January 18th and the morning of January 19th, 2010, five manhole covers were stolen from Keefer Road, St. Catharines. An additional cover was stolen from Carlton Street in St. Catharines on Tuesday January 26th, 2010
The cast iron manhole covers are black, circular in shape, approximately 23½” ’ in diameter and weigh about 160lbs each.
The covers are placed above manhole entrances for public safety reasons. The depth of the manhole entrances range from 7’ to 25’ below the ground. When the covers are removed, it presents an extremely dangerous situation for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles.

| | 1/22/2010 - Welland Avondale Robbery | |
On December 8 th, 2009 at approximately 10:20 pm, a robbery occurred at the Avondale convenience store located at 104 Elmview Street, in the city of Welland.
Three males entered the store brandishing two baseball bats and a firearm. The suspects demanded money from an employee and obtained an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects fled on foot, travelling West on Elmview Street.
Uniform patrol members of the Niagara Regional Police Service were assisted by the Canine Unit and members of the Forensic Services team. A search for the suspects proved unsuccessful.
The suspects are described as:
1) White male, 5’9” to 6’1” tall, slim to medium build, approximately 15-30 years of age. He was last seen wearing a dark coloured winter jacket with a fur lined hood. His face was covered with a bandana and he held a light coloured bat in his right hand.
2) White male, 5’9” to 6’1” tall, slim to medium build, approximately 15-30 years of age. He was last seen wearing a dark coloured winter jacket with a fur lined hood. His face was covered with a light coloured bandana. He held what appeared to be a shortened long gun.
3) White male, 5’9” to 6’1” tall, slim to medium build, approximately 15-30 years of age. He was last seen wearing a dark coloured winter jacket and dark coloured baseball hat with a logo on the front. His face was covered with a light coloured bandana. He was holding a baseball bat.

| | 1/15/2010 - Police Seek Public Assistance in a Niagara on the Lake Robbery | |
At approximately 4:25 am on Tuesday January 5 th 2010, a robbery occurred at a residence on Concession 7 Road in the town of Niagara on the Lake.
A lone male entered a barn located on the residential property and attempted to start a vehicle that was parked inside. The owner of the vehicle, upon hearing the noise, proceeded towards the vehicle in an attempt to deter the suspect and a brief struggle ensued.
The suspect fled the property in the stolen vehicle and was last seen traveling North on Concession 7 Road. The vehicle was a white 1988 Pontiac Tempest, 4 -door sedan.
The vehicle was recovered on the same day at the end of Townline Road, in the town of Niagara on the Lake. The vehicle had been driven off the end of Townline Road and was partially hung up on rocks on the frozen shoreline of Lake Ontario.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 25 years of age, last seen wearing a white shirt and white jacket.
No injuries were sustained by the owner of the vehicle. The public is always reminded to be cautious when dealing with people engaged in criminal behaviour and to avoid confrontation whenever possible.

| | 1/8/2010 - Niagara Falls Stanley Convenience Store Robbery | |
At approximately 9:00 pm on Thursday December 10th, 2009, a robbery occurred at the Stanley Convenience Store located at 5551 Heritage Road in the city of Niagara Falls.
A lone male suspect entered the store with a baseball bat. Some words were exchanged between the store owner and the suspect and a brief struggle ensued. While the two struggled, a second suspect entered the store brandishing a firearm and proceeded to an area behind the counter. The second suspect grabbed several lottery scratch tickets and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Both suspects left the store on foot and were last seen travelling east across Stanley Avenue and into a field towards Whirlpool Road.
Uniform patrol members of the Niagara Regional Police Service were assisted by the Canine Unit and members of the Niagara Parks Police in a search for the suspects. As a result of the search, several stolen articles were recovered; however, the suspects were not located.
The suspects are described as:
1) White male, 5’8” tall with a thin to medium build. Last seen wearing a black jacket and black toque and carrying a dark coloured baseball bat.
2) Unknown race, approximately 6’2” tall, clean shaven with a thin build. Suspect two was last seen wearing a black bomber style jacket with fur, dark coloured hood and was carrying a firearm.
Minor injuries were sustained by the store owner as a result of the struggle.

| | 12/31/2009 - Fort Erie Truck and Travel Centre Robbery | At approximately 4:00 am on Tuesday December 2nd, 2009, a robbery occurred at the Fort Erie Truck and Travel Centre, located near Pettit Rd. and the QEW in Fort Erie.
A lone male entered the store through the South side entrance, brandishing a firearm. The suspect made demands to an employee to empty the cash register. The suspect placed an undisclosed amount of cash in a black and grey knapsack that he was carrying. The suspect exited through the North side entrance and was seen getting into an older, white Dodge Caravan. The van was being operated by a second suspect. The van was discovered abandoned a short distance away and determined to have been stolen prior to the robbery.
The male suspect who entered the store is described as white, 19-24 years of age, approximately 5’9” tall, weighing 150lbs. He was wearing a dark, three quarter length hooded jacket, black balaclava, blue jeans and running shoes with white edges. The driver of the van was also wearing a balaclava.
No injuries were sustained as a result of this robbery.
